While the current situation in Umno was not new, he expressed confidence in the party which would overcome the various challenges. In this regard, he also reminded all Umno members to respect Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the former deputy prime minister was still the party's deputy president.
"Umno members should accept Tuesday's Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak rationally and with full responsibility.
"Let us close ranks and not see a split among ourselves. Erase the parochial feelings and keep an open mind," he said, reminding members that Muhyiddin had stated his commitment to give priority to the party.
Hishammuddin, who is also defence minister, said this when opening the Mersing Umno division meeting here today.
Also present were Mersing Umno chief Datuk Dr Abd Latiff Ahmad and his deputy, Datuk Abd Latif Bandi.
Meanwhile, commenting on the meeting between the Umno president and Umno Liaison Committee chairmen yesterday, Hishammuddin said this was the best approach to resolve the current situation.
"This is our way to explain to Umno members, right to the branch level. This is the best method to overcome all our internal problems," he noted. — Bernama
